A Message from the President

Since its founding in 1897 the Lynn Museum and Historical  Society has been the repository and custodian of Lynn’s 380 year history. As such, our library and collection contain rich elements of local and national history that reflect happenings and life in one of the oldest communities in the United States. However, even   stalwart   custodians of the past must adapt and change in order to fulfill their mission and to share the City’s rich history with the present generations. As a result, the Board of Trustees, during the last few years has taken several deliberate steps to increase the relevance of the Lynn Museum and Historical Society.

First, we applied for and received a “challenge grant” from the Massachusetts Cultural Council to modernize and renovate our facility and exhibits at 590 Washington Street, which is located in the Arts and Cultural District in Central Square. We are now in the midst of a major capital campaign to not only meet the challenge but also exceed it in order to meet the capital needs of the LMHS.

Second, the Lynn Museum and Historical Society made a conscious decision to reach out, partner, collaborate and otherwise work with other entities within the community .These efforts are now starting to show results, as evidence by our inaugural Legacies  Event, which  was attended  by over 300 people.  As part of our capital campaign, 38 Lynn Legacies (businesses and individuals who have contributed to culture and fabric of the city) were honored and their stories will become a piece of the Lynn Museum and Historical Society’s permanent collection.

Third, in April we hired Kate Luchini as Director/Curator of the LMHS. Kate brings over twenty years of professional museum experience, (most recently with the Peabody Essex Museum) to our organization. We are confident that Kate is the person to implement the Board’s vision and plans for its facility, exhibits, and programs.

As a historical society, we recognize the values of our past but we also value the prospects for the future.  So, on behalf of the Board of Trustees and our membership, I invite you to follow our progress, visit our facility, attend our events, and above all consider joining the Lynn Museum and Historical Society.
