Pine Grove Cemetery

The Pine Grove Cemetery is a municipally owned cemetery established in 1850 named for the wealth of pine trees that frame the Rhodes Chapel and the entrance at Boston Street. The cemetery consists of approximately 250 developed acres and houses almost 90,000 interments.

At the turn of the century the greenhouse operations at Pine Grove were nationally recognized for their floral designs.

The Artificial Pond featured an electric fountain.

The wall around the cemetery was listed in Ripley’s Believe It or Not as the “second longest contiguous stone wall in the world”, second only to the Great Wall of China. The fieldstone wall was one of many projects built during the WPA in the l930’s.

The most visited site at Pine Grove is the grave of Harry Agganis, the “Golden Greek” the legendary Red Sox first basemen and BU quarterback.
Many other notable Lynn residents are buried in Pine Grove including:      John Adams -- Benjamin Franklin Falls --  William Poole -- Henry Lovering -- Israel Graves -- Lydia Pinkham -- Elihu Thomson -- Charles Herbert Woodbury -- Governor Frank Allen along with many Newhalls  and Breeds. There are also several sections dedicated to Lynn's veterans, fire and police.
