At the turn of the 20th century,
Lynn built a fabulous “Boulevard” that connected Washington St. in Lynn to Humphret Street in Swampscott.

Before the Metropolitan Park Commission built the Boulevard, private estates extended to the beaches. Parts of these estates had to be purchased and some buildings were moved farther back from the shore. One home was placed on a barge and transported across the bay to Nahant.

Many of Lynn’s wealthy built mansions on the water. Tourists would visit and vacation on our beaches sending postcards to relatives. Post cards of Lynn's shoreline are the most common of all the Lynn cards.

Lynn's colonists discovered that lobsters were plentiful, some as large as twenty pounds. They were often caught between the rocks at low tide. They were so common that they were ignored. The Indians used the lobster as bait and would only eat them when they could not catch bass.
