   The story of General Electric began with the merger of two companies, the Edison General Electric Company and the Thomson-Houston Electric Company in 1892.

By 1917 the G.E. had 14,000 employees, the company developed supercharged engines for high altitude planes by 1918 to receive their first military contract.

Lynn’s River Works grew to 24,000 employees during World War II. In 1942 the first U.S. jet engine was successfully tested there in a heavily insulated room known as “Fort Knox.”

Charles Coffin of Lynn became the first President and CEO of the General Electric Company. Under  Coffin the G.E. bought Saugus River marshland (River Works) and expanded to 100 acres.
