Flax Pond

This view of Flax Pond from the hills above Euclid Avenue shows the exclusive lake side homes as well as some ice houses. Prior to refrigeration, Flax and Sluice Ponds were used for ice. The ice blocks were cut and stored in ice houses and the ice was covered in straw and kept cold for use during the summer months.

The above view of Flax Pond is towards Euclid Avenue before the construction of the stone wall during the Depression's W.P.A..  The pond was once named Lake Wenuchus, for the Sachem Squaw Wenuchus, leader of the local Native American tribe of the Pawtuckets. Wenuchus was married to Sagamore James and  kidnapped by the Tarrantine tribe from Maine. She was returned after a ransom was paid.
Below is the view coming down Euclid Ave. towards the pond.

Lake Wenuchus would be renamed Flax Pond as the settlers of Colonial Lynn used the pond to wash their flax.

Flax has always been a pond for canoeing, boating, fishing and swimming. At the Flax Pond Boat House one could rent a small boat or canoe for the day to enjoy one of Lynn's fabulous recreational facilities.
The post card below is from the early 1970's.
