(Top) The Old Tunnel Meeting House, located on the Common across from Whiting Street was named as such due to the tunnel shaped roof on its cupola. It was Lynn's center of government from 1682 until 1806 when Lynn's government officials were asked to leave the privately owned building due to frequent damage caused during meetings.(Bottom) The city would conduct its town meetings at the Methodist Meeting House on the Common until it could build its own government building. The Old Town House would serve as Lynn's City Hall from 1814 until it burned in 1864. The flag pole on the Common marks its former location. |
City Hall- Past and Present
Lynn built a new city hall in 1867 on the North end on the Common. It would serve as Lynn's center of government until it was torn down to build a new City Hall in 1948. |
President Teddy Roosevelt made a formal visit to Lynn in 1902, speaking from the steps of City Hall. |
Lynn Memorial City Hall and Memorial AuditoriumBuilt in the modern Art Deco style and opened in 1948, the auditorium has hosted such talent as the Beach Boys, Roy Orbison, Fats Domino, New Kids on the Block, Bill Cosby to name a few. A total rehab in 2002 has made the Lynn Memorial Auditorium one of the finest venues North of Boston.(According to an old Lynn History book) On the lawn of the City Hall of Lynn is a bronze tablet which says, “On this spot stood the ancient building known as the Old Tavern built about the year 1675. Tablet erected by Lynn Historical Society in 1898.”
