Central Square

Central Square has always been the "hub" of Lynn. Several modes of transportation are visible in this early post card.

There were dozens of restaurants, theatres, newspaper and smoke shops, bakeries, bowling alleys, billiards halls, dress shops, shoe shops,  factories and more. Literally the center of Lynn's commerce and entertainment was easily accessible from any part of town via trolley.

In the 1920's early automobiles had the opportunity to mix it up with trolley cars, pedestrians, bicycles, carriages and wagons.

By the 1940's trolleys were replaced by busses and pedestrians had crosswalks. Central Square would remain a vibrant shopping district until the pedestrian mall of the 1970's would halt traffic on Union Street and the closing of Lynn's downtown McDonald's due to a lack of business.
(Do you remember Quality Doughnuts, Arnold's Stationary, Klemm's, Huntts, Kennedy's, Connolly's, Essex Bank, etc.? What else was here?)
